Stream Yoga + Meditation

Meditation Series

Join us for guided meditations, instructions (dharma) and encouragement for creating a daily at-home meditation practice.

Classes are offered in a series but can also be considered to be ‘self-contained.’ Especially if you have come to previous series with us, and/or you are looking for a community (sangha) to meditate with — it’s certainly appropriate to simply ‘come when you can.’

Open Heart, Open Mind

Open Heart, Open Mind

a 6-week meditation course

Wednesday Evenings | 7-8:30pm
November 6 – December 11, 2019
Stream Yoga + Meditation, 819 Weaver Rd, Port Colborne

If you let go a little, you will have a little happiness. If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of happiness. If you let go completely, you will be free.”
― Ajahn Chah

Join us for a 6-week meditation series. In this late Autumn series leading up to the holidays, we will explore practices that open the heart and mind: generosity, forgiveness, love, compassion, joy and equanimity.

In these ongoing Wednesday sessions, we investigate Buddha’s traditional teachings (dharma) in a way that is modern, simple, nondogmatic and practical; with a clear view to the ways in which we can use meditation and mindfulness to free our minds in the midst of our busy and stressful lives.

A simple joy is available to us any time that we can relax — regardless of our external conditions. In fact, learning to relax and be still may be the single most important thing we can do to improve our life, our relationships and ultimately our world.

Dates
November 6, 13, 20, 27, December 4, 11, 2019

Cost
$72 (includes HST) for the 6-week series (or $15 drop-in per class); you can also drop-in any time using your Stream Yoga class passes.

Pre-register by email hello@gentlydownthestream.org, call 905.401.YOGA (9642) or text Heather at 519.400.7862.

What to bring/wear?
If you have a meditation cushion or stool that you are accustomed to using, please bring it along. Bolsters, blankets, yoga mats and blocks are available at the studio. No special clothing is required, but it’s good to be comfortable, so please avoid restrictive clothing.

Can I drop in for one or two sessions only?
Yes! Classes are offered in a series but can also be considered to be ‘self-contained.’ Especially if you have come to previous series with us, and/or you are looking for a group of like-minded people to meditate with — it’s certainly appropriate to simply ‘come when you can.’ Drop-in fee is $15 (includes HST).

September 11 – October 30, 2019
Stream Yoga + Meditation, 819 Weaver Rd, Port Colborne

You can’t ever get everything you want. It’s impossible.
Luckily, there is another option: You can learn to control your mind,
to step outside of the endless cycle of desire and aversion.”

― Bhante Gunaratana

Join us for an 8-week meditation series. In this series, we will explore the Buddha’s 8-fold path to happiness. The understanding and practice of these steps (wise view, wise intention, wise speech, wise action, wise livelihood, wise effort, wise mindfulness, wise concentration), offers a path of gradual and reliable relief from our ongoing struggle with the suffering caused by our confusion, greed, and hatred.

We will investigate Buddha’s traditional teachings (dharma) in a way that is modern, simple, nondogmatic and practical; with a clear view to the ways in which we can use meditation and mindfulness to free our hearts and minds in the midst of our busy and stressful lives.

We will spend much of our time together in meditation, but leave time each session for a brief talk and for discussion and Q&A. You will be encouraged to spend time meditating at home between the weekly classes.

A simple joy is available to us any time that we can relax — regardless of our external conditions. In fact, learning to relax and be still may be the single most important thing we can do to improve our life, our relationships and ultimately our world.

Among other sources, we’ll take some inspiration from Bhante Gunarantana’s book 8 Mindful Steps to Happiness: Walking the Buddha’s Path. You may wish to get a copy of the book, but it is not necessary for the enjoyment of the series. You can simply attend sessions, relax and see what is helpful for you.

As humans, we are made of non-human elements. Humanity cannot exist by itself alone. Humanity has to inter-be with animals, plants, and minerals. If we remove these non-human elements, there’s no humanity left.
Mother Earth is always taking care of us. When we learn to take care of our body, our feelings, our perceptions, our mental formations, and our consciousness, we are also taking care of Mother Earth.”

Thich Nhat Hanh

One thing that training in mindfulness can show you is that that which is aware of unpleasant sensation is the same, and feels the same, as that which is aware of pleasant sensation. There really is a kind of equanimity intrinsic to consciousness that can be quite liberating to discover.”
