Moving toward insight

an 8-week meditation course

Wednesday Evenings
July 4 – August 22, 2018

7-8:30pm
Stream Yoga + Meditation, 819 Weaver Rd, Port Colborne

Join us for an 8-week meditation series. In this Summer series we will emphasize cultivating a daily practice of relaxation, inner stillness and insight. We will consider the obstacles to our practice, and begin an exploration of the seven factors of enlightenment: mindfulness, investigation, energy, joy, relaxation, concentration and equanimity.

We will spend much of our time together in meditation, but leave time each session for a brief talk and for discussion and Q&A. You will be encouraged to spend time meditating at home between the weekly classes.

A simple joy is available to us any time that we can relax — regardless of our external conditions. In fact, learning to relax and be still may be the single most important thing we can do to improve our life, our relationships and ultimately our world.

Dates
July 4, 11, 18, 25, August 1, 8, 15, 22, 2018

Cost
$95 (includes HST)

Pre-register by email hello@gentlydownthestream.org or call/text Heather at 519.400.7862.

What to bring/wear?
If you have a meditation cushion or stool that you are accustomed to using, please bring it along. Bolsters, blankets, yoga mats and blocks are available at the space. No special clothing is required, but it’s good to be comfortable, so please avoid restrictive clothing.

Should I pre-register?
Yes! Ideally, we would like to know who will be attending the series. Pre-register by email hello@gentlydownthestream.org or call/text Heather at 519.400.7862.

Can I drop in for one or two sessions only?
Yes! Classes are offered in a series but can also be considered to be ‘self-contained,’ like a traditional Satsang. Especially if you have come to previous series with us, and/or you are looking for a group of like-minded people to meditate with — it’s certainly appropriate, if you can not commit to the full series, to ‘come when you can.’ Please get in touch ahead of class to ensure there have been no changes to schedule etc. Drop-in is $15.

Who is leading the sessions?
Heather Fenton (Finlayson)

Heather first met with Buddhist teachings in the Fall of 2000, and has since spent her time avidly exploring the nature of mind. Drawn initially to the teachings on emptiness and the Lojong practices of training the mind, she studied almost exclusively within a westernized-Tibetan tradition for her first decade of practice. Her path then led her in the direction of nondual teachings, Vipassana practices, and generally into a more embodied somatic approach. Most recently, Heather has taken up Hatha asana practice and graduated year-long 200-hour yoga teacher training program in December 2017.

Over the years, Heather has led regular meditation sessions and workshops. Her main interest has been to introduce simple meditation and mindfulness practices without cultural or religious trappings, and to encourage others – whatever their background or beliefs – to build and sustain a daily practice of stillness and inner reflection.

Heather is an independent graphic designer by trade, who lives and loves with her husband, teenage stepkids and two teeny tiny wiener dogs in Port Colborne, Ontario.

Join us for a 6-week meditation series where we will explore the basic buddhist philosophy of self-cultivation, through the lens of the mahayana buddhist practice of the six perfections (generosity, discipline, patience, effort, meditation, wisdom).  We will develop concentration and insight, with a focus on bringing the fruits of our meditation practice into our daily lives.

Lovingkindness

a 6-week meditation course

7-8:30pm
Stream Yoga + Meditation, 819 Weaver Rd, Port Colborne

Love springs up in tender concern, it blossoms into caring action. It makes beauty out of all we touch. In any moment we can step beyond our small self and embrace each other as beloved parts of a whole.
― Jack Kornfield, from his book The Art of Forgiveness, Lovingkindness, and Peace

Join us for a 6-week meditation series where we will explore basic buddhist practices of concentration and insight, with a focus on cultivating lovingkindess (metta in the original Pali, maitri in Sanskrit).

Please NOTE: We’ll take inspiration from Sharon Salzberg’s book “Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness.” You may wish to get a copy of the book, but it is not required reading, and you will also be just fine to simply come to sessions and relax.
