Living Mindfully

Saturday, September 7, 2019 | 9am–4pm
Stream Yoga + Meditation, 819 Weaver Rd, Port Colborne

“As a bee gathering nectar does not harm or disturb the colour and fragrance of the flower; so do the wise move through the world.” – Dhammapada: Flowers, verse 49

Spend the day with us in quiet contemplation. A day-long retreat can be surprisingly refreshing and insightful!

We will use mindfulness to investigate the nature of our experience: our day will include periods of seated and walking meditation, eating meditation (lunch), rest, instructions for practice (dharma), Q&A and discussion. We will practice silence in the supportive company of others. This retreat is suitable for new and experienced meditators.

“Living Mindfully” will be an exploration of the Five Precepts of Buddhism. With the intention to follow these traditional ethical guidelines, we become increasingly aware of the ways in which we are relentlessly pushed and pulled by our thoughts, feelings and beliefs.

The five precepts are the undertaking to refrain from: 1) harming/taking life, 2) stealing/taking what is not freely given, 3) harmful sensual/sexual behaviours, 4) lying/divisive/abusive/idle speech, and 5) taking intoxicants to the point of heedlessness.

These are not understood to be externally imposed rules, but rather, they are internal guides that help us to see more clearly the ways we tend to think, speak and behave. The very undertaking of being mindful of thought, speech and action, over time, has the potential to increase our compassion and wisdom.

Put simply, we become more considerate and wise. Choosing non-harm, patience and kindness, understanding that these qualities lead to inner and outer peace.

This retreat is designed as a ‘day-long intensive’ to complement the weekly meditation classes here at Stream. However, you do not have to have attended these classes to come and enjoy the retreat.

We are thrilled to have Jacqueline Gilbey join us from Arrive Yoga & Mindfulness, in Guelph, Ontario. She will co-lead the retreat with Heather Fenton.

Registration fee: $35* (includes HST)
Lunch and refreshments included.
Please register by Sept 4th, so that we can plan lunch appropriately.

For more information and to pre-register: email hello@gentlydownthestream.org or call us at 905.401.YOGA (9642) or call/text Heather at 519.400.7862

* Your $35 registration fee covers lunch and the operating costs of the retreat. In the tradition of the Buddha, the teachers will offer instruction (dharma) freely and will be accepting donations. The practice of giving (dana) in this way happens on the side of the teacher when they share the teachings and their experience, and happens on the side of the student when they support the teachers, in accordance with their means. This practice also allows us to offer the retreat at an accessible cost. If the registration fee is still beyond your means, please let us know and we will do our best to arrange a scholarship.
