Meditation Series

July 26, 2020 - We are continuing to offer online classes through August, along with occasional in-person outdoor workshops and impromptu 'pop-up' Yoga on the Lawn sessions. For details about our current schedule, please visit our Online page.

We are currently preparing for socially-distanced classes in the Hut to begin in September. To receive notification when the new schedule is released, be sure you are on our mailing list (you can sign up by filling out the form near the bottom of this page).

Join us for guided meditations, instructions (dharma) and encouragement for creating a daily at-home meditation practice.

Classes are offered in a series but can also be considered to be ‘self-contained.’ Especially if you have come to previous series with us, and/or you are looking for a community (sangha) to meditate with — it’s certainly appropriate to simply ‘come when you can.’

Wednesday Evenings | 6:30-7:30pm

Stream Yoga + Meditation, 819 Weaver Rd, Port Colborne

In these ongoing Wednesday sessions, we investigate Buddha’s traditional teachings (dharma) in a way that is modern, simple, nondogmatic and practical; with a clear view to the ways in which we can use meditation and mindfulness to free our minds in the midst of our busy and stressful lives.

A simple joy is available to us any time that we can relax — regardless of our external conditions. In fact, learning to relax and be still may be the single most important thing we can do to improve our life, our relationships and ultimately our world.

The Shape of Contentment

Breathing in, I calm body and mind. Breathing out, I smile.
Dwelling in the present moment I know this is the only moment.”

― Thich Nhat Hanh

How we experience the world depends on the state of our mind. When we are anxious, then people, places and things appear overwhelming, maybe even dangerous. But when we are content, the world appears friendly and safe and life is enjoyable.

Our states of mind are not random. Just like all conditioned phenomena, they are a result of causes and conditions. When the conditions come together in the sky (e.g. moisture, sunlight, perspective), a rainbow will appear to an observer. In the same way, when conditions are right in the mind (e.g. integrity, effort, wisdom), contentment will arise.

What does this mean? It means we can shape our experience. We can create conditions for contentment, for ease, for acceptance, joy, love, compassion, generosity, wisdom… we can live more fully + freely.

You can’t ever get everything you want. It’s impossible.
Luckily, there is another option: You can learn to control your mind,
to step outside of the endless cycle of desire and aversion.”

― Bhante Gunaratana

Join us for an 8-week meditation series. In this series, we will explore the Buddha’s 8-fold path to happiness. The understanding and practice of these steps (wise view, wise intention, wise speech, wise action, wise livelihood, wise effort, wise mindfulness, wise concentration), offers a path of gradual and reliable relief from our ongoing struggle with the suffering caused by our confusion, greed, and hatred.

We will investigate Buddha’s traditional teachings (dharma) in a way that is modern, simple, nondogmatic and practical; with a clear view to the ways in which we can use meditation and mindfulness to free our hearts and minds in the midst of our busy and stressful lives.

We will spend much of our time together in meditation, but leave time each session for a brief talk and for discussion and Q&A. You will be encouraged to spend time meditating at home between the weekly classes.
